Hebrews 10:23

Let us hold fast the confession of our hope without wavering, for He who promised is faithful.  Hebrews 10:23

Stand-Firm1Promises are never any better than the character of the one who makes them.  It doesn’t matter how much faith someone has if the one in whom that faith is placed cannot be trusted.  As children of God, the issue must never be the sincerity of our trust, but the steadfastness of the One we trust.  That’s why the writer of Hebrews confidently exhorted believers not to be “wavering” in their confession.  The phrase “without wavering” is literally translated “standing without leaning.”  It is a clear portrait of an erect believer positioned with his feet securely planted on a firm foundation – a position lovingly prepared for him and faithfully promised to him.

How comforting it is to know that God has chosen to accomplish His will within the framework of clearly stated parameters.  These self-limiting restrictions are known in the Bible simply as promises.  He has interwoven those pledges with His attributes and has demonstrated what He is like through the promises of what He will do.  Those promises are gracious windows through which the inquisitive believer may view His likeness.  Do you want to know what God is like?  Then look at what He has promised!

What God was like yesterday and what He will be like tomorrow is nothing more or less than what He has promised to do today.  For He has said, “I am the Lord, I do not change” (Malachi 3:6).  What a wonderful truth that is!  It is the very foundation upon which all of our faith is built.  Everything we are or ever hope to be in Christ is securely resting upon that unshakable pillar.  May we keep our faith in this firm foundation, without wavering! *

Dear Lord Jesus, I praise You because You are as good as Your word and You never lie.  I am grateful that my hope of salvation is as secure as the integrity of Your character.  Please grate me the confidence based on Your grace, and humility in Your presence.  Help me remember that You have begun a good work in me and will complete it until the day of Jesus Christ.  I pray in Your holy name.  Amen.
